Comparing the effects of conventional oxygen versus heated high-flow oxygen on suction frequency in patients with tracheostomy

Study Description

We aim to compare two types of humidification during trach weaning trials- conventional oxygen therapy delivery (cool mist aerosol trach collar mask (ATC)) and heated high-flow oxygen (HHFOT) via trach interface adapter to determine if one is more effective than the other in reducing need for airway suction.

Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  1. 18 years of age or older

  2. Have a percutaneous or open tracheostomy placement by the acute care surgery service and require ongoing mechanical ventilation support
  3. Are followed by the acute care surgery and/or neuro-critical service
  4.  

Exclusion Criteria

  1. Severe trauma of the face or neck that causes obstruction of the airway
  2. Diagnosis of a neurodegenerative disease
  3. Cervical spinal cord injury who require diaphragmatic pacer
