Two veteran administrators at the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville are stepping into new senior associate dean roles.
George R. "Skip" Wilson III, M.D., has been named senior associate dean for clinical affairs, overseeing the faculty practice plan. In addition, Guy I. Benrubi, M.D., will move from the clinical affairs role to senior associate dean for faculty affairs, where he will serve as a faculty facilitator on campus.
Wilson has been at the college 25 years and Benrubi for 31 years, so both have the knowledge and experience to help lead on campus, said Daniel R. Wilson, M.D., Ph.D., vice president of health affairs and dean of the UF College of Medicine-Jacksonville.
Dr. Skip Wilson has held several leadership roles on campus, including chair of community health and family medicine, chair of the Shands Jacksonville credentials committee and associate dean for special projects.
"Throughout his tenure at UF, Dr. Wilson’s tireless efforts have never wavered from a singular focus – quality care for our patients and the highest educational standards for our students, residents and fellows," Dr. Daniel Wilson said.
Dr. Skip Wilson will be in charge of the faculty practice plan, charged with bringing revenues in line with the cost to provide medical care. He said the medical care provided by UF doctors is second to none in the area and there’s just one piece missing from making UF&Shands the go-to place for medical care in the region.
"We’ve got everything it takes, if we can just figure out how to provide customer service," Dr. Skip Wilson said. "Costco figured it out. Wal-Mart figured it out. Ritz Carlton figured it out. Why can’t we?"
Dr. Skip Wilson earned his medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 1973 before joining the U.S. Navy as an active duty medical officer. He completed his family medicine residency at the Navy Hospital in Camp Pendleton, CA. After his Navy active duty service ended in 1979, he entered the U.S. Navy Reserve and went into private practice before joining UF in 1987. Dr. Skip Wilson retired from U.S. Navy Reserve service in 2004 with more than 26 years of service.
When Dr. Daniel Wilson started at UF in February, Benrubi suggested to him that as the campus was headed for difficult financial times, the senior associate dean of clinical affairs should be a full-time job. Benrubi is also chair of obstetrics and gynecology and did not want to leave that position. Dr. Daniel Wilson asked him to try both and Benrubi did – for about six months.
It became clear a singular focus was needed on that role, so Dr. Daniel Wilson tapped Dr. Skip Wilson, now an adjunct professor of community health and family medicine. Benrubi is moving into the faculty affairs role, a new position, where he will work to develop faculty with an emphasis on the educational and research component of their roles at the academic health center.
"We’re asking a lot of our faculty, and we want to make sure that have the resources and opportunity to do what we are asking of them," said Benrubi, the Robert J. Thompson, M.D., Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, one of six endowed professorships on campus.
Benrubi earned his medical degree from the State University of New York, Downstate-Brooklyn in 1974. He completed his residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at the UF College of Medicine-Jacksonville, where he also served as administrative chief resident. After completing a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Benrubi returned to the UF College of Medicine-Jacksonville in 1981.
