2011 Research Day Celebrations

2011 Faculty Researcher/Scholar of the Year, Mark L. Hudak, M.D., left, receives his award from Robert C. Nuss, M.D.

The University of Florida Health Science Center Jacksonville's annual research awards presentation and ceremony, sponsored by the office of research affairs, brought together faculty, fellows and residents to share their academic and scientific research accomplishments.

The program, held May 12, 2011 in the Learning Resource Center Auditorium, featured platform presentations, poster viewing and award presentations.

The keynote speaker was David E. Longnecker, M.D., FRCA, director of health care affairs for the Association of American Medical Colleges. His presentation was entitled CTSI Update Enhancing Clinical and Translational Research.

A special presentation was made by David Nelson, M.D., associate dean for clinical research at the University of Florida College of Medicine, and director of the University of Florida Clinical and Translation Science Institute - Shaping the Workforce We Want for the Health System We Need.

The 2010 Faculty Research/Scholar of the Year, Robert L. Wears, M.D., professor in the department of emergency medicine presented Studying Safety in Healthcare: Time for New Models of Science.

2011 Faculty Research/Scholar of the Year Award

Robert C. Nuss, M.D., professor, associate vice president for health Affairs and dean of the regional campus Jacksonville, introduced the 2011 Faculty Researcher/Scholar of the Year, Mark L. Hudak, M.D., professor and assistant dean for managed care and associate chair for the department of pediatrics. Dr. Hudak is also chief of the division of neonatology and associate medical director of the neonatology intensive care unit (NICU) at Wolfson Children's Hospital.

The honor, first awarded in 1996, is given to a faculty member displaying three scholarship qualities: discovery (research), dissemination (publication in journals) and application (presentation at regional and national professional meetings).

Special Recognition

In a special presentation, Alan R. Berger, M.D., professor and associate dean for research affairs recognized Dr. Robert C. Nuss for his dedication to research on the Jacksonville campus. Upon highlighting many research improvements and enhancements on this campus brought about by Dr. Nuss' support and commitment, Dr. Berger thanked him with a special engraved plaque.

2011 Poster and Platform Presentation Awards

Of the fellows, residents and faculty who submitted poster and platform presentations, six were chosen for platform presentation awards and six received poster presentation awards for their excellence.
