The University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville is pleased to announce the appointment of Carmen Isache, MD, as chief of the division of infectious diseases, effective June 1, 2025. She will succeed Michael Sands, MD, MPH, who led the division since 1998. Sands will continue his appointment as the Infectious Disease Control Officer and as the associate program director of the infectious disease fellowship program.
Dr. Isache graduated from University of Medicine and Pharmacy Grigore. T. Popa – Iasi, Romania, in 2009. She ranked in the top 5% of her graduating class. After completing medical school, she joined the internal medicine residency program at SUNY Downstate University of Brooklyn at Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn, NY (2010-2013) where she received the Intern of the Year award. Following residency, she completed a fellowship training in Infectious Diseases at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville (2013-2015). Subsequently, in 2015, she joined the department of medicine at the UF College of Medicine – Jacksonville as a clinical assistant professor in the Multi-Mission Track and she became a core faculty member of both the internal medicine residency program and infectious disease fellowship program.
In 2020, Dr. Isache was promoted to the rank of associate professor and she was appointed as the director of infectious disease fellowship program. Since then, her growing national recognition and collaboration with Duke University has brought the UF College of Medicine – Jacksonville several multicenter trials funded by the National Institute of Health, or NIH. Because of these externally funded trials, Dr. Isache has become an author on publications in very high-impact medical journals, such as the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of American Medical Association. In recognition of her national stature, high academic achievements, leadership and professionalism, she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha, or AΩA, Honor Medical Society in the faculty category. She was the first UF Health Jacksonville faculty member chosen to join the AΩA Honor Medical Society.
I want to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Sands for his leadership of the division. He will continue his appointment as the Infectious Disease Control Officer and as the associate program director of the infectious disease fellowship program, providing seamless transition of the leadership of the division.
