Dean Edwards Honored by Alma Mater for Outstanding Achievements

A graduate of the class of 1981, Edwards is a proud ECU Pirate and was part of the first four-year class of the Brody School of Medicine.

East Carolina University has recognized Linda Edwards, MD, FACP, Dean of the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville as a 2024 Outstanding Alumni Award recipient. This award celebrates distinguished professionals who demonstrate outstanding service to the university, excellence in leadership, and significant career accomplishments.

A graduate of the class of 1981, Edwards is a proud ECU Pirate and was part of the first four-year class of the Brody School of Medicine. The university, located in Greenville, North Carolina, Edwards’ home state, is the No. 1 producer of primary care physicians in the state.

Edwards, however, took her expertise to the Sunshine State after completing her medical degree, serving the Jacksonville population for 40 years.

She feels privileged to be acknowledged by her beloved university.

“It is a true honor to be recognized by my alma mater, East Carolina University,” Edwards said. “In many ways, attending ECU has laid the foundation of my medical career while teaching me valuable life lessons. As a physician, medical educator and the first female Dean of the UF College of Medicine – Jacksonville, I often reflect on my training in North Carolina. I never imagined the young woman who left medical school in 1981 would be recognized years later for her contributions to health care. As a medical school graduate, you leave your alma mater hoping to make a positive change in the world. I try to do that each day that I am given. I am deeply grateful.”

East Carolina University will celebrate Edwards’ at an official ceremony later this year.
