David A. Caro, MD, and Carol Ann B. Diachun, MD, MSEd, have been appointed to educational leadership positions at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville.
Diachun, a professor of anesthesiology, has been appointed associate dean for educational affairs, effective Nov. 16, 2022. For the past year, Diachun has served in this role as interim associate dean. She is also the associate chair for education for the department of anesthesiology and the former program director for the anesthesiology residency. Diachun completed her undergraduate studies in health sciences at the State University of New York at Buffalo, medical school at Stanford University and anesthesia residency at the University of Pennsylvania and Stanford University. She pursued additional education training as the Lowell A. Glasgow Dean’s Teaching Fellow and completed a master of science in health professions education from the University of Rochester. She was recruited to UF in 2014.
Diachun has been involved in anesthesia education at the national level through numerous presentations in the Society for Education in Anesthesia, or SEA, and the American Society of Anesthesiology. She served as chair of the SEA Educational Meetings Committee, has been program director for three SEA national meetings and currently serves as secretary of the society. Diachun also served as an invited education study section grant reviewer for the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research. She helped to establish and continues to serve on the editorial board for Anesthesia Toolbox, a collaborative effort by 90 anesthesia programs to design and implement an international online anesthesia residency curriculum. In 2020, Diachun was recognized for her contributions to medical education by the UF College of Medicine when she was inducted into the Society of Teaching Scholars.
Caro, a professor of emergency medicine, has been named associate designated institutional official (DIO) for the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville, effective Jan. 1, 2023. Caro completed his undergraduate degree in biology at the University of Miami, medical school at the University of South Florida and emergency medicine residency at Carolinas Medical Center.
Caro joined UF in 1997 serving the College of Medicine – Jacksonville as a clinical faculty member in the department of emergency medicine from 1997 to 2000, assumed the role of associate residency director and clerkship director until 2007, and then assumed the role of residency program director. He now serves as the associate chair for education, residency program director, and medical education fellowship program director in the department of emergency medicine. He completed the Master Educator Program offered by the University of Florida College of Medicine, served on the UFCOM curriculum committee from 2000 to 2012, and was inducted into the Society for Teaching Scholars in 2014. He has been recognized with numerous teaching awards, including the American College of Emergency Physicians Outstanding Faculty Teacher Award, multiple departmental teaching awards, and has received the UFCOMJ Exemplary Teacher Award annually since its inception. Caro currently serves on the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s Residency Review Committee for Emergency Medicine.
