Dominick Angiolillo, MD, PhD, has been appointed chief of the division of cardiology in the UF College of Medicine – Jacksonville department of medicine, as well as medical director of UF Health Cardiovascular Center, effective July 1, 2021. He will be succeeding Theodore Bass, MD, who has led the division for 21 years.
Dr. Angiolillo graduated summa cum laude from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart Medical School in Rome, Italy, where he completed training in internal medicine and cardiology. He pursued training in interventional cardiology at the Complutense University of Madrid in Spain, followed by a doctorate in cellular and molecular cardiology. In 2004, he joined the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville where he is now a tenured professor of medicine. He is also director of Cardiovascular Research and program director of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program. Dr. Angiolillo is board-certified in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Much of Dr. Angiolillo’s professional career has been devoted to cardiovascular research in the field of thrombosis, for which he has received numerous national and international academic recognitions. He has authored more than 550 peer-reviewed articles with a citation h-index of 99 and 47,711 citations total. He has also authored nearly 40 book chapters and is the editor of his own textbook. For the past seven years, Dr. Angiolillo has ranked in the top 1% of most-cited researchers worldwide according to Clarivate Analytics, formerly Thomson Reuters’ list of the World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds. His international visibility has attracted scientists from across the globe to train under his leadership. In addition, Dr. Angiolillo has been a clinical mentor to numerous residents and fellows, and has been recognized multiple times with UF’s Exemplary Teacher Award. His leadership role as an academic clinician-scientist has allowed to him to nurture and promote career growth and development of many young trainees pursuing both academic and clinical careers in the United States and abroad.
Dr. Angiolillo is an active member of many cardiovascular societies in the Unites States and Europe. In addition, he is on the editorial board of numerous medical journals. He is a scientific reviewer for many extramural funding agencies in the United States and Europe. He is also chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine’s interventional cardiology exam committee.
