UF Health Jacksonville recognized for health care equality by Human Rights Campaign Foundation for second year in a row

UF Health Jacksonville has been recognized as an LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the second year in a row that the organization has not only received the honor, but also achieved a perfect score.

The HEI evaluates and scores health care facilities’ policies and practices related to equity and inclusion of their LGBTQ patients, visitors and employees across the nation. UF Health Jacksonville, which last year became the first hospital in Northeast Florida to receive the designation, earned the maximum score in each category and a total score of 100 points.

"This is yet another example that highlights the great work our staff is doing to provide compassionate and inclusive care for all patients and their families,” said Leon L. Haley Jr., M.D., MHSA, CEO of UF Health Jacksonville and dean of the UF College of Medicine – Jacksonville. “It has always been, and will remain, a priority to promote and support diversity and inclusion efforts across our enterprise and in the community."

Every year, HRC recognizes the health care facilities that participate in the HEI for their dedication and commitment to LGBTQ inclusion. A record 765 health care facilities actively participated in the HEI 2020 survey. Of those included in the HEI, 495 earned an LGBTQ equality leader designation.

"From the previously unimaginable impact of the COVID-19 pandemic to the horrific incidents of racial violence targeting the Black community, the events of the past year have brought about so much pain and uncertainty,” said HRC President Alphonso David. “Yet, even during this moment of profound unrest, we are seeing more of our humanity and resilience come to life. For me, nowhere is that more true than through the tireless dedication of our health care providers and the intrepid support and administrative staff members by their sides that show up every day to ensure this life-saving work continues."
