The purpose of this study is to quantify the number of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) and Midline Catheters placed, evaluate the adherence to Michigan Appropriateness Guide for Intravenous Catheters (MAGIC) guidelines, and quantify the complications related to catheter placement in the acute inpatient setting. Researchers hypothesize that there has been an increased use of midline catheters in the past 3 years, mimicking the trend of increased PICC catheters in the past 10 years. Researchers also posit that this increased use may be associated with increased line-related venous thromboembolic complications and infectious complications. Additionally, researchers will evaluate if the Indications for line placement in the acute care setting are supported by MAGIC guidelines. A retrospective review of medical records will be performed to obtain study data. Outcomes of interest will be line-related infections, venous thrombotic or thromboembolic events, hospital/ICU lengths of stay, costs of care, and mortality.
