Drs. Rathore and Qureshi receive awards at the DCMS annual meeting

Eli. N. Lerner, M.D., F.A.C.S., is the latest in the line of University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville faculty to serve as president of the Duval County Medical Society.

Lerner, department of surgery, was installed as president Nov. 29 at the society’s annual meeting, which also saw a UF professor and resident honored. Lerner, who was elected to the position last summer, takes over for Ashley B. Norse, M.D., an associate professor of emergency medicine at the UF College of Medicine-Jacksonville.

Norse took over the presidency from her UF colleague Malcolm J. Foster, M.D., an adjunct professor in the department of medicine.

Lerner came to the UF College of Medicine-Jacksonville in 2010 after a 34-year career in private practice in Florida, including in Jacksonville since 2004. Lerner earned his medical degree from Chicago Medical School and did his residency in surgery at nearby Loyola University Medical Center.

Mobeen H. Rathore, M.B.B.S. (M.D.), CPE, FACPE, FIDSA, FAAP, pediatric department associate chair, chief of the division of pediatric infectious diseases and immunology and director of UF CARES, received three awards from the society, including the 2012 Community Service Award for his long-standing service providing care and education on HIV/AIDS services to patients and families in Northeast Florida.

Rathore also won two John A. Beals' Awards for Medical Research, one for an original investigation that appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine and another for a review in the Advances in Pediatrics.

Surgery resident Irfan Qureshi, M.D., won the Clinical Observation category of the G. Shahin Awards for a Physician in Training in Duval County for research published in the journal Surgery.

The Duval County Medical Society is the oldest such organization in Florida and has about 2,000 members in Jacksonville and the surrounding area.
