An assistant professor of emergency medicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine—Jacksonville is now the third woman to become president of the Duval County Medical Society.
Ashley B. Norse, M.D., associate program director for the emergency medicine residency program, was inaugurated last night as the 125th president of the organization. She was elected to the position last summer.
"Being elected as the third woman DCMS president is one of my most rewarding experiences. I am extremely honored," Norse said. "Women are still under-represented in organized medicine even though currently they comprise almost 50 percent of incoming medical students in U.S. medical schools. However, for multiple reasons, women are still not actively involved in their professional medical societies. This is changing slowly, and I am very excited to be part of that change."
Norse said she wants local physicians to be more aware of what is going on in the state legislature and plans on advocating local positions in Tallahassee.
Norse went to medical school at the Louisiana State University College of Medicine in New Orleans and completed her residency in emergency medicine at the UF College of Medicine—Jacksonville.
Norse takes over the presidency from her UF colleague Malcolm T. Foster, Jr., M.D., an adjunct professor in the department of medicine.
The Duval County Medical Society is the oldest such organization in Florida and has about 2,000 members in Jacksonville and the surrounding area.
