Dr. Saran Valdez-Johnson and Dr. Haidee Custodio, fellows in the pediatric infectious diseases fellowship, and Dr. Asma Salahuddin, pediatric resident, have been selected to present their research at the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) annual meeting to be held in Denver, Colo. in May 2011.
Valdez’s abstract, "Prevalence of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) colonization in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)", studied the risk of colonization and infection in children admitted to the PICU.
Custodio had two abstracts that were selected for poster display. Her first abstract, "Improving Hepatitis C Testing Compliance among Infants Born to Hepatitis C and HIV Co-Infected Mothers," is a quality improvement project conducted at the University of Florida’s Center for HIV/AIDS Research, Education and Service (UF CARES).
Her second poster was done in collaboration with Dr. Salahuddin, a second-year pediatric resident. The abstract, "Cost-Effective Hepatitis B Serology Testing Prior to Hepatitis B Vaccination in the Akha Tribal Children in Northeastern Thailand," looked into the seroprevalence of Hepatitis B among Akha children in Thailand. They determined that there was a high Hepatitis B seroprevalence, and it was more cost effective to do Hepatitis B screening first before giving the vaccine.
