DCMS Press Release

(Jacksonville, FL) – John W. Kilkenny III, MD, was inaugurated as the 123rd president of the Duval County Medical Society (DCMS) at its 157th Annual Meeting on Thursday, January 21, 2010.

John W. Kilkenny III, MD is a Professor of Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology for the University of Florida (UF) in Jacksonville, FL. Dr. Kilkenny began his affiliation with UF as a Clinical Associate/Instructor in 1991, after five years of private practice surgery in Vero Beach, FL. Since 1995 he has been a Faculty member and Attending Surgeon at UF & Shands in Jacksonville. From 2007-2009 Dr. Kilkenny served as Editor-in-Chief of Northeast Florida Medicine, a quarterly journal published by the DCMS Foundation.

Dr. Kilkenny has served the Society as a Vice President from 2007-2009, President-elect in 2009, a Board of Directors member since 2005 and a member of the DCMS Journal & Communications Committee and Bioterrorism, Disaster Response and Homeland Security Committee. Besides holding DCMS leadership positions, Dr. Kilkenny is active in state and national organizations, serving as a member of the Florida Medical Association (FMA) House of Delegates, and Board of Governors member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). He will become President-elect of the ACS Florida Chapter in May.

When he is not pursuing his medical career or attending professional meetings, Dr. Kilkenny likes to put aside his scalpel and grab his fishing rod, pilot’s headset and even his electric guitar. He enjoys deep sea and surf fishing, flying, music – especially guitar, and college and professional sports.

Dr. Kilkenny’s goals as DCMS President are, "To successfully guide our organization through this most uncertain of times for medicine. The physician-patient relationship as well as our profession’s very stature is under siege from government, the legal establishment, and industry. I also plan to represent our society at the state and national levels with the quality of leadership that my predecessors have so ably demonstrated."

Dr. Kilkenny was installed as the DCMS President before 150+ members and guests attending the DCMS Annual Meeting. His wife Elaine and colleagues from UF & Shands Jacksonville were honored guests.

Founded in 1853, the DCMS is the oldest and most storied medical society in Florida, and it serves as the voice for organized medicine in Duval County. It is a voluntary professional association of 2,000+ physicians (MD/DO) dedicated to the health of Jacksonville and the surrounding community. DCMS is chartered with the Florida Medical Association and the American Medical Association.
