The University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville has appointed Paul Dougherty, MD, as chair of the department of orthopaedic surgery and rehabilitation.
Dougherty comes to Jacksonville from Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University in Detroit, where he served as a professor of orthopaedic surgery and program director of their orthopaedic surgery residency. From 2008 through 2013, Dougherty was a clinical associate professor and program director in the department of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Michigan. He was also a staff surgeon at the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In addition, he retired as a colonel in the Medical Corps of the United States Army Reserve in 2012.
“We are privileged to have Dr. Dougherty as the new chair of the orthopaedic surgery and rehabilitation, and anticipate great departmental accomplishments as he assumes his new roles,” said George R. Wilson, MD, senior associate dean for clinical affairs at the UF College of Medicine – Jacksonville.
Dougherty received his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, and completed his residency at the Naval Hospital in Oakland, California and a fellowship in orthopaedic trauma at the University of Louisville.
Dougherty is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and a member of the American Orthopaedic Association, Orthopaedic Trauma Association, and Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons. He is also a board examiner for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Dougherty’s clinical and research interests include surgical education, long-term follow-up of military amputees, wound ballistics of combat casualties, and external fixator biomechanics. He is an associate editor for Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, and the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma. In addition, he is a consultant reviewer for four other major journals. He has published more than 50 papers and book chapters and has given more than 80 regional and national presentations.
Dougherty is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery, and will see patients at UF Health Orthopaedic Surgery – Jacksonville at 655 West 8th Street.
