Welcome to the site for the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville patient safety training programs. At UF College of Medicine – Jacksonville, a culture of safety for our patients is our highest priority. To that end, we offer numerous training opportunities in addition to those already integrated into our graduate medical education (GME) curricula, including patient safety electives for residents and/or fellows and a patient safety fellowship program. UF College of Medicine – Jacksonville boasts faculty who are nationally and internationally recognized leaders in patient safety and simulation education and research.

Our mission is to provide residents and fellows with the best possible experiential learning in the field of patient safety, and to train excellent, highly-motivated professionals dedicated to making a difference in healthcare through leadership and advocacy in patient safety. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, or ACGME has placed patient safety prominently in the program requirements for every training program and review committee. The UF College of Medicine – Jacksonville electives and fellowship are conducted with rigorous goals and objectives, curriculum and evaluation, based on the six ACGME core competencies.

Elective rotations are offered as two-week or four-week electives with the fellowship program director as preceptor. The emphasis will be on the fundamental principles of patient safety, conduct of system assessment and identification of system errors, and strategies to address system safety in a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary team approach. Opportunities for safety improvement initiatives and research are encouraged as a longitudinal practicum with ongoing mentorship following the rotation.

The patient safety fellowship is a one-year immersion in safety principles and system safety improvement strategies. A UF College of Medicine – Jacksonville patient safety fellow is provided with a robust environment for working with academic, clinical and administrative leaders to assess and improve patient safety and clinical care delivery in a measurable way. Graduates of this fellowship will carry forward tools and skills for leadership in safety and quality to apply throughout their careers, whatever their specialty training.
