John Davis, MD, named chair of obstetrics and gynecology

John Davis, MD, has been named chair of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville. Davis is familiar with UF, recently serving as the interim chair and residency program director in the department of obstetrics and gynecology in Gainesville before taking over the department in Jacksonville on Jan. 1, 2019.

Davis succeeds Guy Benrubi, MD, a professor in the department now completing a six-month sabbatical to focus on his project on difficult cesarean deliveries. Benrubi has been a part of UF since his residency beginning in 1975. He left briefly to become a fellow at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, but returned to UF as a faculty member in 1981 and served as chair for 22 years.

“We’re excited to bring Dr. Davis aboard because of his passion both for medicine and for the University of Florida,” said Leon L. Haley, Jr., MD, MHSA, CEO of UF Health Jacksonville and dean of UF COMJ. “He is replacing a legend in Dr. Benrubi, but Dr. Davis inherits a talented staff of physicians and caregivers dedicated to meeting the needs of our diverse patient population.”

Andrew Kaunitz, MD, a professor and associate chair of obstetrics and gynecology, chaired the department on an interim basis following Benrubi’s departure in October.

Davis attended college at Washington University in St. Louis and graduated from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University in 1986. He completed his residency training at UF in 1990 and spent four years in Germany serving in the United States Army. He then returned to UF as a faculty member in 1995, serving as the director of the division of gynecology through November 2016 when he was appointed associate chair of the department of obstetrics and gynecology.

“I’m very appreciative of the opportunity to join the wonderful health care team in Jacksonville,” Davis said. “I’m looking forward to leading a dedicated group of providers who focus every single day on improving the lives of those who trust UF Health for their care.”
