The department of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville will soon undergo a series of leadership changes.
John Davis, MD, has been named chair of the department, effective Jan. 1, 2019. Davis is currently the interim chair and residency program director in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the UF College of Medicine in Gainesville.
Guy Benrubi, MD, a professor and chair of obstetrics and gynecology at UF COMJ, will step down from his administrative roles Oct. 1 for a six-month sabbatical program to complete a long-awaited project on difficult cesarean deliveries.
“Dr. Benrubi exemplifies what it means to be part of an academic institution,” said Leon L. Haley Jr., MD, MHSA, dean of the college and CEO of UF Health Jacksonville. “His research efforts have gained national recognition. His love for teaching students the technical part of the job, as well as showing genuine compassion for patients, has earned him countless Outstanding Student Teaching Awards from the University of Florida.”
Benrubi came to campus as a resident in obstetrics and gynecology in 1975, serving as administrative chief resident from 1977 to 1978. He then pursued a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and, upon completion, returned to Jacksonville.
He joined the UF COMJ faculty in 1981 as an assistant professor until 1986, when he was promoted to associate professor. Five years later, he earned the title of professor. He has served as chair for the past 22 years, guiding a department that has experienced much growth and success during his tenure.
Benrubi has held various leadership roles within the organization, most notably senior associate dean for clinical affairs, senior associate dean for faculty affairs and interim administrative dean for the college; president and chief executive officer of UF Jacksonville Healthcare Inc.; and associate chief medical officer for UF Health Jacksonville.
“Dr. Benrubi is well respected by all members of our faculty,” Haley said. “We thank him for his many years of leadership and service.”
Andrew Kaunitz, MD, a professor and associate chair of obstetrics and gynecology, will chair the department in an interim capacity until Davis arrives in January.
