The Role of Juxtatumoral Measurements on MRI for Renal Mass Staging

Study Description

The purpose of this study will be to evaluate if there is a relationship between juxtatumoral perinephric fat and tumor burden on renal MRI scans of patients with suspected renal cell carcinoma.

We plan to obtain our data via mPower and Visage/PACS, identifying patients with documented "renal cell carcinoma" on MRI. Data gathered from mPower includes "age", "sex", "accession number", "diagnosis", "CPT codes". On Visage/PACS, we will measure the depth of perinephric fat (in mm) with annotation markers provided by Visage, around a suspected renal cell carcinoma seen on MRI. Variables taken from mPower and anatomic measurements taken from Visage will be placed in rows in a separate Excel spreadsheet for each de-identified patient. We will strip all the identifiers (i.e. accession number) after data analysis, thereby having an excel spreadsheet that is de-identified of patient information.

Inclusion Criteria: Patients with renal pole masses visualized on CT or MRI, and who have a preceding renal ultrasound will be included in our study. Patients who do not have renal pole mass biopsies, confirmed mass on CT or MRI, and associated renal ultrasound will be excluded from the study. Obtain records: We will obtain this information via retrospective chart review between from October 1 2009 to October 1 2019 on mPower, a software database offered by UF Health Jacksonville of radiology studies and reports. We will search for patients by using key words of "renal pole mass", "renal mass", "renal cell carcinoma" and CPT code "76770". Data Coding and data analysis: For each patient, we will access their diagnostic data on EPIC and Visage/PACS and record the presence or absence of renal pole mass in the radiography interpretation reports on ultrasound, CT and MRI. This data will be analyzed using SAS statistical software.
