Filled with anticipation and expectation on Match Day, 98 graduating medical students learned they will complete the next phase of their medical career as residents at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville. The annual day celebrates fourth-year medical students who have successfully matched with residency programs after a process of applying and interviewing. An algorithm created by The National Resident Matching Program makes matches based off the students’ rankings of their program choices and the programs’ rankings of candidates.

Pleased with the Match Day results, Elisa Zenni, MD, interim senior associate dean for educational affairs, is eager to see how incoming residents will contribute to the advancement of medicine and patient care.

“We are very excited to welcome a diverse and international group of new residents to our University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville family. Of all the individuals who matched with us, 35% of them completed a student rotation here, which is great to see,” Zenni said. “Congratulations and thanks to the program and clerkship directors and coordinators, faculty and residents who worked hard to recruit superb candidates during the challenging pandemic environment.”

Match Day by the numbers

The incoming group of 98 residents represent 24 states and 8 countries. Of the group, 54 are from allopathic medical schools and 32 are from osteopathic medical schools.

There are 27 incoming resident physicians from medical schools in the state of Florida, including two from the UF College of Medicine in Gainesville. 

Seventeen residency programs filled their positions through the match process this year.

Incoming residents will officially begin their training on July 1.
