Shands Jacksonville’s nursing excellence recognized with prestigious Magnet® recognition

Shands Jacksonville is proud to announce that it has been granted Magnet® recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The Magnet program is nationally recognized as the gold standard of nursing excellence. Currently, only 386 of the more than 6,000 U.S. healthcare organizations have received the credential.

The Magnet Recognition Program® was developed by the ANCC to recognize healthcare organizations that provide nursing excellence and to disseminate successful nursing practices and strategies. Nursing staff at Shands Jacksonville underwent a rigorous and lengthy application and review process that demanded widespread participation from leadership and staff.

“Shands Jacksonville is such a special place and so deserving of this special recognition,” said Kelly Miles, vice president and chief nursing officer. “I am just thrilled that our nurses and other staff are being honored with this prestigious national distinction because our nurses and staff give so much to this community and our patients. Experienced care and expert caring. They deserve it and I am proud to be a part of it.”

For Shands Jacksonville and its more than 1,000 nurses, the recognition means validation for the level of excellence they have worked to achieve in patient care. It should also provide patients with the reassurance, based on carefully measured standards, that the nurses overseeing their treatment are highly credentialed, use best practices for quality and performance, receive strong satisfaction reports and have a positive influence on other hospital staff.

“Magnet recognition is a shining example of the work our nurses do every day. This is something they have been working towards for a long time and it is well deserved,” said Jim Burkhart, president and CEO of Shands Jacksonville. “The quality of care that they provide to our patients is unmatched. On behalf of the UF physicians and the staff at Shands Jacksonville, I would like to thank our nurses and congratulate them on this prestigious honor.”

Magnet recognition is in effect for four years and can be renewed if an organization reapplies and continues to demonstrate performance according to quality benchmarks and reporting.
