UF New Berlin Family Medicine Center receives certification

The UF New Berlin Family Medicine Center received certification as a Master Diabetes Clinic by the Florida Academy of Family Physicians (FAFP) on August 24, 2010.

The Diabetes Master Clinician Program was initiated in 2003 to help clinicians ensure excellence in their care of diabetes. The program uses an innovative approach, such as small group teaching techniques and visits to the clinicians’ offices, to train physicians and their staff to conduct diabetic group visits, to use a Web-based disease registry and function in a team care environment.

The diabetes registry produced patient and practice report cards which revealed the UF New Berlin Family Medicine Center achieved well above registry averages for many of the quality criteria. The diabetes quality criteria scores are some of the highest in the registry of 200 physicians. Some of the criteria include A1C < 7 and blood pressure < 130/80. Other significant criteria include documentation of yearly foot exams, yearly urine micro-albumin and yearly eye exams.

Christopher B. Scuderi, D.O., assistant professor in the department of community health and family medicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville and medical director of the UF New Berlin Family Medicine Center, said that entire staff has done a great job of working with their diabetic patients and empowering the patients with involvement in their care. Dr. Scuderi was recognized as a Master Diabetes Clinician and three staff members – Patti Stokes, Latesha Harmon and Kasaundra Lee – were awarded Master Diabetes Clinician Associate Awards by the FAFP.
