For the fifth time since 1998, the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville orthopaedic surgery residents won the annual Ortho Bowl. The competition, which started in 1998 to test the knowledge of orthopaedic residents, was held during the meeting of the Florida Orthopaedic Society in Ft. Lauderdale, May 20th – 23th, 2010.
Stephen R. Arndt, M.D. and Joel A. Tucker, M.D., fifth-year residents, defeated orthopaedic surgery residency teams from the University of Florida (Gainesville), University of Miami, University of South Florida and Orlando Regional Medical Center.
“Being the Ortho Bowl Champions for three years in a row is unprecedented. Our residents have demonstrated consistently that they are top performers among their peers in the State of Florida! Together with the National Orthopaedic Leadership Conference (NOLC) scholarship that is being provided, I can also say that we are nurturing the future leaders of orthopedic surgery as well”, said Michael Suk, M.D., J.D., M.P.H., associate program director of the orthopaedic surgery residency.
Drs. Arndt and Tucker, in addition to serious bragging rights, each won $150 and brought home a trophy appropriately covered in casting material. The UFCOM-J team also won the right to nominate one of their residents for an all expense paid trip to attend the NOLC in Washington, DC as a member of the Florida Orthopaedic Society Delegation. There they will be immersed in an intense lobbying experience with congressmen and health care administrators while learning how to advocate for their specialty.
