TraumaOne flight program celebrates 25 years

Shands Jacksonville invites the community to celebrate the TraumaOne flight program’s silver anniversary on Thursday, June 3.

The celebration will be held in the LRC Atrium at Shands Jacksonville at 5:00 p.m. The event will include a special flight crew presentation, anniversary reception and toast.

Since the program started 25 years ago, the Lake City and Jacksonville-based helicopters have transported more than 38,000 patients.

Five facts about the flight program:

  • TraumaOne’s aeromedical ambulance service is used exclusively to transport severely injured patients and those suffering from strokes, poison exposure or cardiac emergencies.
  • The TraumaOne network is supported by a staff of specially trained medical personnel who operate and supervise the air ambulance service in Jacksonville and Lake City.
  • TraumaOne flight crews consist of pilots, flight nurses and paramedics.
  • TraumaOne flight nurses and paramedics have extensive training and years of experience in caring for trauma patients.
  • TraumaOne pilots have no medical background at all. This is by design. The pilots’ decisions must be made purely on their aviation experience. They are not given details of an accident until after they have accepted the call and determined it is safe to fly to the scene based on FAA regulations; this practice prevents pilots from making emotional decisions.
