Sim Wars campus competition

The first campus Sim Wars competition was sponsored by the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville (UFCOM-J) Center for Simulation Education and Safety Research (CSESaR) and the Office of Educational Affairs on Tuesday, April 20, as part of the 2010 Medical Education Week. This competition involved four interdisciplinary teams of resident physicians with broad representation from the core graduate medical education programs, with nursing participants contributing to each team, as well. Each of the teams was presented with a basic patient resuscitation scenario, with simulation taking the form of both live actors and high-fidelity manikins. Winning teams proceeded to a “play-off” competition to determine the winner.

The teams were evaluated in three areas: 1) clinical skills, judgment and critical actions; 2) communication with each other and with patients and family; and 3) teamwork and safety. Judging-as well as debriefing, inquiry and evaluative feedback-was provided by Drs. George (Skip) Wilson, Tom Morrissey and Connie Haan.

The winning team members were: Junar Bohol, RN, BSN, CEN, Emergency Department; Ashley Fox, M.D., Emergency Medicine; Michael Reader, M.D., Surgery; and Asma Salahuddin, M.D., Pediatrics.

The UFCOM-J Sim Wars competition was modeled after a similar event conducted by the American College of Emergency Physicians. UFCOM-J has benefited from the experience, expertise and national leadership of Dr. Andy Godwin, as well as the contributions of Dr. David Caro and the CSESaR staff.

The competition provided a venue for faculty to learn more about simulation education, to see how to utilize team performance to meet educational objectives, and was a follow-up component to the spring Faculty Teaching Workshop “Simulation Training: Key Points for Instructing and Evaluating”.
