The first Doctor’s Day observance was in 1933 in Winder, Georgia. Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, decided to set aside a day to honor physicians. This recognition occurred on the March 30th to coincide with the date of the first administration of anesthesia by Dr. Crawford W. Long in Barrow County, Georgia, on March 30, 1842.
In October 30, 1990, President George Bush signed the resolution designating March 30 as “National Doctor’s Day”.
To show appreciation for the role our physicians play in caring for the sick and advancing the art and science of medicine, University of Florida College Of Medicine – Jacksonville physicians will be honored on Monday, March 30, 2009 at Shands Jacksonville.
Following this year’s theme – Around the World – gourmet coffee from various regions of the world will be served throughout the morning, and an international buffet lunch will be available for all the physicians.
Join us in recognizing and thanking these dedicated, hardworking individuals who spend countless hours caring for the ill and supporting our community.
