UF Physician Selected to Serve on NIH Consensus Panel

Linda Edwards, M.D., University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville associate professor of medicine and division chief of general internal medicine, was selected as one of 12 panel members who heard evidence about the use of hydroxyurea during the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Consensus Development Conference in Bethesda, MD, Feb. 25-28.

The conference was held to review the use of hydroxyurea in the treatment of sickle cell disease. Hydroxyurea is generally used to treat certain types of cancer. The panel addressed the effectiveness of hydroxyurea in patients who have sickle cell disease and potential solutions to short- and long-term side effects of taking hydroxyurea.

The panel’s consensus statement will be published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in the June 17 issue. For more information, log on to www.annals.org.
