Shands Jacksonville now offers another way to encourage the healing process in patients and their families through the Arts in Medicine program.
Arts in Medicine involves artists bringing their talents to the hospital in order to enhance the patient experience and in some cases actually visually transform the setting of the hospital.
The program coordinator, Jennifer Stanelle explains that the program consists of a variety of volunteer artists, such as painters, dancers and writers. “It is not just for patients, but for family and staff, as well. This will improve the hospital experience for everyone.”
Visitors that walk the hallway leading to the NICU will soon notice an alumni wall where art from former patients will be displayed. This is intended to encourage and put a smile on the faces of those who have a child currently in the NICU. “Parents are in distress here. Hopefully, they will realize there is life after this.”
Another exhibit in the works is the wall of patient art tied into the history of Shands and the surrounding community. With so many opportunities to integrate art in to the healing process, “I am excited to see the impact that this program will make.”
