UF & Shands Jacksonville Provides Medical Care for 2005 Gate River Run

Jacksonville, Fla. – UF & Shands Jacksonville is the official medical provider for the 2005 Gate River Run Saturday, March 12. This is the third year the academic medical center has sponsored the River Run, which attracts more than 10,000 runners annually.

Emergency medicine physicians and staff from UF & Shands Jacksonville will provide treatment in the medical care area, located at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds in the Agricultural Building. Major and minor medical areas will be housed in the facility, along with a cooling area and massage/chiropractic services for race-day participants.

“UF & Shands Jacksonville will coordinate a major medical area for runners suffering from dehydration, sprains, heat exhaustion and other related illnesses. We will also have a minor medical area to treat minor injuries, cuts and scrapes,” said Leonardo Nasca, M.D., River Run medical director and University of Florida emergency medicine physician. “Three First Aid stations will also be placed along the race route for runners.”

The Shands Jacksonville Care Van will be making an appearance at the 2005 Gate River Run. The Care Van is a colorful, mini-health unit on wheels that travels throughout the First Coast providing health and wellness information. In addition, screenings are made available as well as interactive displays focusing on different health issues. The Care Van program is operated by Cox Radio with UF & Shands Jacksonville as the title sponsor for the 2005 Care Van.
