UF & Shands Jacksonville Gears Up For the MS150

Jacksonville, Fla. – The Comprehensive Multiple Sclerosis Center at The Neuroscience Institute at Shands Jacksonville is a proud sponsor of this year’s PGA MS150 Bike Tour Sept. 18-19. The Cycle to the Shore ride winds along a 150-mile route from the World Golf Village in St. Augustine to the Plaza Resort and Spa in Daytona Beach.

The University of Florida and Shands Jacksonville will provide medical experts during the ride offering comprehensive care for participants at every first aid tent throughout the tour. Shands Jacksonville will also have their own team of cyclists riding for the cause.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a long-term, often disabling disease that attacks the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms range from mild, such as numbness in the limbs, to severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. These abnormalities can have a traumatic impact on the quality of life, especially for those in the prime of their life.

“In Jacksonville alone, more than 10,000 people suffer from symptoms associated with MS,” states Craig M. Senzon, M.D., a UF assistant professor of neurology. “At Shands Jacksonville we’re not just treating the symptoms of this disease, we’re better educating the patients on how to rise above it.”

Scott Silliman, M.D., a University of Florida assistant professor of neurology and medical director of Shands Jacksonville’s MS program, joins Dr. Senzon in leading the team of professionals in offering on-campus services that include physical therapy, urology, neuropsychology, MRI and radiology, bone density testing and neuro-opthamology. The team also includes nurse practitioner, Jan Daniel, MSN, ARNP, program coordinator Cathie Gipp, Cicely Bryant, RN, and Barbara Jackson.
