Come Visit Shands Jacksonville’s Trauma Center

Jacksonville, Fla. – Shands Jacksonville and UF Jacksonville want to recognize Trauma Awareness Day, Thursday, May 20. Shands Jacksonville’s Level One Trauma Center provides trauma care to 27 North Florida and South Georgia counties, covering a 120-mile radius around Jacksonville. Trauma injuries are the leading cause of death for all people under the age of 40.

A special seminar, “From Roadside to Bedside”, will be held in the Learning Resource Center at Shands Jacksonville from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. During that time, learn about new procedures like managing the airway and fluid resuscitation. Also, find out how emergency personnel are preparing for possible disasters and mass casualties from terrorist bombings.

Throughout the day there will be opportunities to talk with members of our Level One Trauma staff. We can also facilitate a tour of the TraumaOne Helicopter, Flight Deck and Shands Jacksonville Trauma Center. And, several trauma survivors will be on hand to share their miraculous stories.

Trauma Awareness Day is part of the national celebration of Emergency Medical Services Week. The purpose is to bring together local communities and medical personnel to publicize safety and honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of the medical “front line.” Governor Jeb Bush made a proclamation to recognize Trauma Awareness Day in Florida during EMS Week 2004.
