Shands Jacksonville Wants Your Child to Be Safe in the Car

Jacksonville, Fla. – It’s an event offering First Coast families peace of mind when it comes to traveling with their little ones. Saturday, April 3, the public is invited to attend the fourth annual Precious Cargo Safety Celebration being held at the Regency Babies ‘R Us parking lot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Car seat checks will be one way parents-to-be can help keep their babies safe while traveling in a car. Certified car seat technicians will be on hand to either install the child seats or check the installation of seats already installed.

Also, Shands Jacksonville will be handing out free “We Have a Little Emergency” (WHALE) check packets. WHALE is a child safety program that gives rescue personnel vital information about a child in a car seat that’s involved in a serious car crash. Information like the child’s name, emergency contact information and medical information are written on a sticker that is placed on the back of the car seat. Pam Taylor, RN, with TraumaOne at Shands Jacksonville will be there to conduct demonstrations explaining how the program works.

The Shands Jacksonville Care Van will also be on hand to pass out important health and wellness information for the entire family. The Shands Jacksonville Care Van is a mini-health unit on wheels. It travels throughout the First Coast providing information on topics like heart disease, cancer, diabetes, asthma, cholesterol, healthy eating, transportation safety and more.

There are fun events planned to go along with the important safety information. Free pickles and ice cream will be provided. Also, several items will be given away by sponsors like Babies ‘R Us, Incognito Maternity, and Mead Johnson. There will be goody bags for all mothers. And, there will be a drawing for free car seats.

Jiffy Lube, the Duval Traffic Safety Team, Shands Jacksonville, and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office are hosting this year’s event. And, WAPE 95.1 FM will be doing a live remote broadcast during the celebration.
