Jacksonville Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellow Receives Prestigious National Award

Jacksonville, Fla. – A University of Florida fellow was recently granted the Section on Emergency Medicine’s EmergiQuiz Award for Best Discussion of An Unknown Case at the 2003 American Academy of Pediatrics’ National Conference and Exhibition.

“It was exciting…to meet fellows from across the country, and to feel part of something bigger than just the pediatric emergency medicine fellowship in Jacksonville,” explained Mardi Steere, MBBS, one of the two award recipients for this year. “It was also a little humbling to be in a room with some of the pioneers of pediatric emergency medicine and for them to be listening to my presentation.”

PEM fellows from across the US submitted about 50 challenging pediatric cases from which four were selected for presentation and discussion at the annual meeting in October.

Steere is the second fellow from the Jacksonville program to be awarded in the six years of the EmergiQuiz competition. Lina Abujamra, M.D., a past graduate was awarded The Best Case Presentation in the 2000 competition.

Steere greatly attributes her success in the competition to all the elements of the program.

“It is very encouraging and gratifying to realize that I receive an excellent level of education and training in Jacksonville,” she said. “We have superb teachers and experiences here.”
