Shands Jacksonville Provides Medical Care to Gate River Run Participants

Jacksonville, Fla.-Shands Jacksonville is the new official medical provider for the 2003 Gate River Run and for the next three years. This is the first time the academic medical center affiliated with the University of Florida has sponsored the River Run, which attracts approximately 9,000 runners annually.

Emergency Department medical staff from Shands Jacksonville will provide treatment in the medical care area, located at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds in the Agricultural Building. Major and minor medical tents will be housed in the facility along with a cooling area and massage/chiropractic services for race-day participants.

The major medical area will be used to care for runners who suffer from dehydration, sprains, heat exhaustion and other related illnesses, while the minor medical area will be used to treat minor injuries, cuts and scrapes. Three First Aid stations will also be placed along the race route for runners.
