Jacksonville, Fla. – Shands Jacksonville Trauma Prevention staff and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will walk 400 Arlington Road Elementary students to school tomorrow marking National Walk Your Child to School Week. The national campaign is designed to raise awareness of walking issues.
“The walk promotes physical activity, teaches safe walking skills to children, concern for the environment, reducing traffic congestion, pollution and speed near schools, and sharing time with community leaders, parents and children,” says Pam Taylor, Shands Jacksonville trauma prevention coordinator. Taylor educated the students on walk safety during two recent school assemblies.
The walk will begin at 9 a.m. and the TraumaOne ambulance helicopter and crew will land at 9:45 a.m. at the elementary school. There will be a brief ceremony at the flagpole following the walk. Poster and essay contest winners will also be announced. One winner per grade level will receive a new Jacksonville Jaguar helmet and the overall winner will receive two Jaguar tickets to the next home game, courtesy of the JSO.
