Jacksonville, Fla. – The University of Florida Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Shands Jacksonville is pleased to offer the latest breakthrough in contraception. The new birth control patch is now available to women seeking an alternative approach to contraception. The patch has been approved and its effectiveness is comparable to the birth control pill.
The birth control patch is now being offered to women in the Jacksonville area at no cost through a research study being conducted by Andrew Kaunitz, M.D., a UF professor and gynecologist at Shands Jacksonville.
“Because it provides birth control one week at a time, many of my patients are interested in the birth control patch. With conventional use, the patch resembles the birth control pill: three weeks of hormone followed by one hormone-free week, during which withdrawal bleeding is expected,” says Kauntiz. “The research study we are conducting will examine extended use of the patch. This may represent an appealing option for women interested in having bleeding episodes less often than each month.”
Women interested in participating in this research study, sponsored by the manufacturer, should contact Shannon McCormick at (904) 858-6972 or Angela Fontaine at (904) 346-5148.
