TraumaOne Crew at Shands Jacksonville Encourages Literacy Among Elementary School Students

Jacksonville, Fla. – The flight crew, paramedics and nurses of TraumaOne, the helicopter service at Shands Jacksonville, will help Love Grove Elementary School students celebrate literacy during a “Vehicle Fair” on April 26 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

The crew will fly and land TraumaOne at the elementary school, located at 2446 University Boulevard, speaking to students about the importance of reading and how literacy aids them in being successful at their jobs. “This is one way that we can provide incentives for children to read and learn about various careers,” said Love Grove Principal Martha Mickel. The Coast Guard, Jacksonville Fire and Rescue and the Jacksonville Electric Authority will also be on hand.

Pre-kindergartners through fifth-grade students at Love Grove have been challenged to read four books a month, which is above and beyond the 25-book standard set by the Duval County Board of Education. According to Mickel, 90 percent of her students have already met this standard.
