Jacksonville, Fla. – It is estimated that 50 percent of all hospital-acquired infections occur from improper hand washing. These infections can result in illnesses such as urinary tract infections, pneumonia, sinusitis and surgical wound infections. In our continued commitment to enhance patient care, Shands Jacksonville has implemented a three-prong, campus-wide approach to healthy hand hygiene for patients, visitors and employees.
-
Soaps: Antibacterial products formulated specifically for patient care and non-patient care areas.
-
Gels: Antibacterial hand gels provide an effective alternative in between hand washing.
-
Lotions: Specially formulated lotion will not counteract antibacterial agents of soaps and gels, preventing dried, cracked skin which can harbor harmful bacteria.
“Our ultimate goal is to ensure patient safety by reducing the risk of infection while encouraging employees to use these antibacterial products on an everyday basis,” explained Vicki Gordon, R.N., infection control coordinator.
As part of the initiative, Shands Jacksonville is providing training to employees on the proper use of these products. This program cost $39,000 to implement and is the first of its kind in the northeast Florida hospital system.
