Making Strides Against Breast Cancer: Means New President for Local Affiliate

Jacksonville, FL – As vice president of Shands Jacksonville’s Community Relations Department, Elizabeth Means is involved in organizations all around the First Coast. Last month, she took on another responsibility as the new president of the board of directors for the north Florida affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

“The most important role of the foundation is to make people more aware of the disease. I want to use my healthcare background to expand the horizon of volunteers and teach the public about the impact breast cancer can have on an entire family,” said Means.

In her duties as the new president of the board of directors for the foundation, Means will direct all activities of the affiliate. She will coordinate with the national office to apply for grants and make special events on the First Coast a success.

To date the Komen foundation, with more than 100 affiliates nationwide, has raised $300 million toward breast cancer education and research. In Jacksonville, hundreds of volunteers worked to raise $200,000 last year. This year’s Race for the Cure is October 13 at the University of North Florida.
